US Ambassador visits Ateneo student scholars

US Ambassador Francis J. Ricciardone, Jr. visited the Ateneo de Davao
University last October 6, 2004. He spoke with a group of students
composed of Muslim, indigenous, and Christian scholars and student
leaders. While the Ambassador took the chance to learn more about the
diverse culture of the students, the students also took the opportunity
to ask the Ambassador about many issues. Questions varying from the upcoming US Election, globalization, family planning, gender bias,
cultural diversity, teaching profession to the US-RP relations were
raised. He answered all questions with pleasure and spoke of his desire
to make the US citizens understand the dynamics of the cultural
diversity in the country. He spoke of the thousands of Americans who
have called the Philippines home and the thousands of Filipinos who
have lived the American dream. He said that the US populace must see
that the time has come to bridge the gap and cross the boundaries. When asked about the opportunities in the United States, he spoke well of
the Filipino health workers. He even said that the increasing demand
for health workers in the US is due to the high quality of care they
provide that only the Filipino culture can build. Before he left, he
heard one of the indigenous scholars speak about her dream of making a
difference in her community. He then left the students a challenge to
excel in school in order to put in action radical changes that can
improve society. (Sherame Ancajas)
