USNS Mercy Completes Successful
Mission in the Philippines

The U.S. hospital ship, USNS Mercy (T-AH19), completed
its goodwill outreach visits to Cotabato and Samar provinces,
|
| where they provided
free medical, dental and veterinary care and constructed
and renovated health care infrastructure in local communities.
Over 26,000 Philippine residents were seen or treated
by USNS Mercy personnel. In addition, over 4,000 animals
were treated as well as over 950 residents treated on

geographical mapping, and provide them resources to
complement their regular classroom lesson in science

The U.S. Navy hospital ship, USNS Mercy, appears
sitting at the end of a rainbow against the blue skies off Maguindanao
Province in southern Philippines. The Mercy is conducting a
two-week goodwill outreach mission to provide humanitarian and
civic assistance to the people of Cotabato and other parts of
Mindanao as well as Samar. The ship is equipped to provide a
variety of medical services. Aside from surgeries and treatment
aboard the ship, joint medical teams from the Mercy and the
Philippine military conducted humanitarian assistance and community
outreach activities at selected areas in Mindanao and Samar.

Ambassador Kristie Kenney, along with Antonio
O. Floriendo Sr., inaugurates the new Growth with Equity in
Mindanao (GEM) offices in Davao City. GEM recently began its
third phase of projects in Mindanao that are funded by USAID.
The Philippine and U.S. governments continue to work together
to improve the lives of the people of Mindanao by developing
infrastructure and expanding economic opportunities. Ambassador
Kenney visited Davao May 19 – 20 launching a U.S. funded Mindanao
teachers’ workshop focused on science and environment training
as well as participating in the Clean Air Youth Alliance launch
